Verrucae are plantar warts caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which are highly contagious through direct person to person contact.

Verrucae thrive in warm damp environments and are usually transferred in communal areas such as swimming pools, changing rooms and spa areas.

Your own body can get rid of the verruca as it recognises it as a virus, and these will mostly disappear within 6 months to two years.

When problems occur

If the verruca is in part of your foot that weight bears it can become painful. Over the counter ointments can be used to help irradiate it, which Hutcheson Podiatry can provide to you via an Appointment.

Often verrucae can be more resistant to treatment and your Podiatrist can offer further treatment which includes:

  • using a scalpel to remove callus (hard skin) which can cover the verruca, allows ointment to penetrate deeper into it.

  • use of liquid nitrogen (cryosurgery) - this freezes the verruca tissue which is a highly effective treatment to help irradiate the virus from the deeper layers in the skin.

  • The cost of cryosurgery is based on a course of treatment from approx 4 - 6 treatments, £22 per treatment.
